Interview with Patricia
Anne Phillips
THE ROCK:
Who is Patricia Anne Phillips, tell us something about you?
Phillips: I am a confident woman who doesn't
accept "no" for an answer. I like being around positive people,
and I am very easy to get along with. I work hard at what I do and try
to be the best at it.
THE ROCK:
Where are you from, and currently residing?
Phillips: I was born and raised in Los
Angeles, California, and currently residing in Los Angeles.
THE ROCK:
Are there any other writers in the family?
Phillips: I am the only writer in my family,
but I have a six year old granddaughter that tells stories very well
for her young age. Her teacher has complimented her on reading and telling
stories.
THE ROCK:
When did you start writing?
Phillips: I started writing my first self-published
novel, titled Something In Common in 1997,
and it was completed in 1999.
THE ROCK:
What prepared you to become an author?
Phillips: I've always been an avid reader
and was fascinated with all the authors. I was lucky enough to learn
how to write by reading. Also, I went to the Reference Section in book
stores and bought books to read that helped prepare me to write.
THE ROCK:
What inspired you to become a writer?
Phillips: Every time I completed reading
a book, I kept telling myself that I could do it if I tried. Writing
was something that I wanted to do badly.
THE ROCK:
What inspired you to write your book?
Phillips: I wanted to write a story that
readers could relate to. Even if someone hasn't experience a devastating
divorce, they either know someone that has or know the problem does
exist. Also, I wanted to write a book that would touch the readers heart,
and a story that would be remembered. That is what inspired me to write
my book.
THE ROCK:
Tell us about your newest creation. What is the premise?
Phillips: I just finished writing an anthology
with two other authors. Now I'm just completing my new novel, Fast Flight
To New Orleans. One sister rushes from Los Angeles to New Orleans to
be by her dying sister's side. It will tell the extent of what one sister
does to hold her family together, and the strength that her family gives
her when she needs it most.
THE ROCK:
Any publishing contracts in the working?
Phillips: Nice Wives Finish First was included
in a two-book contract. The second novel, A Flower Blooms In Thika will
be release in 2006. Fast Flight To New Orleans will be under a new contract.
THE ROCK:
Have you ever self-published" Why or why not?
Phillips: When I completed my first novel,
Something In Common, I knew that since it was my first, the story had
to be different for it to get any recognition and that any agent would
want it. Wrong, no one had heard of me. I got tired of getting rejections
and decided to self-published.
THE ROCK:
What are "traditional publishers" looking for?
Phillips: I would say that traditional
publishers are looking for realistic stories that are a fast read with
a good story plot, and a compelling twist.
THE ROCK:
If you were a publisher, what would be your niche? Why?
Phillips: If I were a publisher my niche
would be contemporary romance because if it's a good story, readers
will feel it, and love or hate the character, and the books would sell.
THE ROCK:
For an author, is having a publishing contract with a "traditional
publisher" important professional? Why?
Phillips: It was important to me professionally
because it meant my writing was accepted and well enough to publish.
THE ROCK:
What are some of your professional and personal achievements?
Phillips: I used to be employed at one
of the largest banks in the Los Angeles and Santa Monica area. And I
was the first Black supervisor in the Santa Monica Real Estate loan
Department. My personal achievement was to become a published mainstream
writer.
THE ROCK:
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Phillips: My favorite authors are Terri
McMillian, Ferm Michaels, Francis Ray and Mary Monroe. There are several
others.
THE ROCK:
Where do you want to be in five years?
Phillips: In five years I want to be known
as one of the best Romance Writers.
THE ROCK:
Where can readers find you?
Phillips: Readers can visit my website
at www.Paphillipsbooks.com,
e-mail address is pguimontp@aol.com.
THE ROCK:
